About
the Om Mandala
The
Om Mandala in the upper left hand corner of this page is a potent symbol created by bringing together the Sanskrit
character "Om" and a circle.
Together, they create a "mandala."
And, "mandala" itself means circle.
As
you repeat "Om" you are following in the footsteps of many
meditators. As you say this sound, a vibration is released which has been
described as the same vibration that birthed the universe. Many
chants include Om to increase healing and calmness; expand consciousness
and openness to the divine; and provide a powerful, quiet, and unity
experience with all that is.
Please
take a moment now to breathe deeply, relax your body, and repeat Om
several times. Let the power of this magnificent vibration soothe
you and bring you peace.

Mandalas are
found in many cultures throughout the world. For example,
Indian, Chinese, Tibetan, and Native American cultures as well as
Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist, and Christian traditions pay homage to
the mandala through art. Mandalas are even naturally
occurring in nature—think of a sunflower, a snowflake, a spider web, a full moon, the sun, and the earth. |
The
mandala represents wholeness, unity, and renewal. Like the word Om,
the depiction of a mandala can be used for meditation and
illumination. By meditating on a mandala, feelings of oneness and of
peace may be experienced.
Carl
Jung, the Swiss-German psychoanalyst, found the mandala a great tool for
increasing insight into oneself and making the unconscious conscious. Why
not create your own personal mandala? You may be surprised at what you
create and what you learn about yourself.
